I sprained and bruised my toe if you can believe that. Man, it hurts. I'll spare you all the details of why it happened, but basically it sits lower than my other toes and got caught on the carpet during an emergency with my dog Missy. Ouch!
But I'll survive. ;oD

Poor thing I hope you feel better soon. I thank God for his perfect timing and blessings your blog is exactly what I needed. Three different times I planned to get the surgery something always messed my plans up. I'm determined to have this procedure done January or February 2013. Your detailed experience really helped me. Thank you and God Bless
Hi I actually have been checking your blog for quite some time because your surgery was a couple of months before mine and it helped me because I got to see what you had went through during certain stages and what to expect. I just actually had my one year anniversary since my surgery a couple of days ago but I am still having issues with my pinky toe trying to cross over my 4th toe and it even tends to do that while wearing tennis shoes, I was wondering if you might have some tips to help fix this. I also had the one stage surgery but they used a cadaver bone and left no screws in my foot, which is why I think I am still having issues with it because the top break that they made still hasn't healed to the cadaver but the bottom did.
Ashley, I'm no expert, but it seems to me that the pinky toe is indeed an issue with Brachy correction. The pinky toe with Brachy usually slides under the fourth toe. After correction it sits where it should, BUT it's not conditioned at all to be there.
So it's sensitive to any rubbing inside shoes or against the new fourth toe position. I found that when I started wearing closed shoes I got a bad water blister either on top or below my pinky toe. So in essence my pinky toe sort of needs to develop a callus to survive the new position it sits in. (unfortunately I've mostly been in flip-flops ever since my surgery, so I don't have a final analysis on my own pinky toe right now.)
Anita, an X-Brachyer in Spain, had pinky issues as well. Her doctor actually did surgery on her pinky toe several months after her Brachy surgery. I have a post on this.
I'm hoping more Brachy surgery patients will blog their pinky experiences because that information will help surgeons develop solutions.
Perhaps you should look up Anita's exact issue and bring it up to your surgeon specifically. This way he realizes that yours in not an isolated issue. This may send him researching for some solutions because as I've said before, this is all new to them right now. As far as immediate comfort, perhaps a band aid around your toe may help.
I'm not sure that the bone graph healing slowly has anything to do with your pinky toe. I will say that my own pinky toe issues did seem to improve with time. It is also possible that your fourth toe may actually thicken up in time, preventing your pinky toe from trying to cross over. Believe it or not my fourth toe has become thicker than it was at my first year anniversary.
At 12 months your 4th and 5th toe ear not at all use to being where they are. It's new and takes time. I hope this helps.
Lil Ms.Classi,
Thank you, so glad my Blog can help. That's the reason behind it. My experience and research tell me that Brachy correction takes about a year on average. Surgeons say it's less but that just isn't the case on average if you look at what people are posting at 8 and 10mo. They still have issues they didn't think they would still be dealing with at that time. But it's not forever and usually worth it.
I'm so glad you have not given up and will be doing what's good for you. Please keep me posted on your progress!
Hey,
First: I wanted to say thank you for writing such a detailed blog. I was well prepared for my two consultations with two different doctors...lol (Probably came off as a know it all to the first doctor) I can get a feeling on what to expect with one-stage...although every journey is different.
Secondly your feet look wonderful! Congratulations. It was not till March did I learn that this condition even had a name watching an episode of "DOCTORS". I ran to the computer and googled it and this blog was the first thing that I saw. I scheduled an appointment to see an Podiatrist the next day. *tear
I also wondered what you think are things absolutley neeed for this long process ...ie...wheelchair?...gauze.. etc
Unlike you, I have bilateral-brachy. My plan is to have surgery on both feet at the same time. I have a support system to help me....because I know i would depend totally on them for months to come..I wondered your thoughts on this..being that you had this on one foot! Hope to hear from you soon!
